Google Maps takes a bold step forward today by allowing users of Google Maps to easily embed a customized map into their site or blog much like we can currently embed a youtube video. Before you had to use api keys, and coding skills to embed a google map now you simply click the “link to this page” option on the top right of a map to share a google map from your site.

As you can see above clicking on “link to this page” will give you a single line of code for you to embed into your blog or Web site.
This is an awesome first step but Google still has some work to do to make this feature truly functional. For instance I would love the ability to show the real time traffic statistics for the main freeways around our offices as that would be a great way to encourage clients to visit our site regularly especially if they were coming to visit our offices.
Some other cool map ideas would be:
- Housing Statistics for your Market
- Featured listings for your Office (check with your Association/MLS to make sure this ok first)
- Gas Prices for your market
- Neighborhood landmarks or sites of interest
- Restaurants you recommend for people new to the area
- Neighborhood demographics
- List of DHL drop off locations etc…
How would you use this feature on your Blog or Website?
While I don’t think this feature will immediately replace the fully functional embeded google maps using the api key it is definitely a step in the right direction towards making google maps sharing accessible for people of all skill levels.
Below I have embeded a hybrid view of the area surrounding the Bay East Association of REALTORS office.
