Best of the Web

One of the questions I frequently get asked is what is your favorite site or sites. The answer I give depends on the context of the question but I want to give you the short list my favorite sites and how I use them to extend my productivity on the web.

StumbleUpon

Web address: www.stumbleupon.com

What they do: A free, service that lets people rate and recommend random Web sites to their friends as they “stumble” around the Internet.

Why I Like it: I love stumbleupon because it gives me a way to find new sites and services that are complimentary to my likes and dislikes. Just like Netflix knows to not recommend Teletubbies and Barney’s big adventure to me this site knows what I like and puts it in front of me.

Web address: www.meebo.com

What they do: Instead of downloading popular instant messaging services such as Yahoo Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger, Meebo lets you access your buddy list and IM all you want from its Web site.

Why I Like it: My best resource is my friends and network and meebo allows me to stay in contact with them regardless of where I am what system I am on. For website owner operators you can embed a meebo chat app into your site letting your visitors get in touch with you whenever and wherever you are.

Web address: www.digg.com

What they do: Digg lets you know what is going on in the web before everyone else does. Digg lets users rate sites and then gives them placement on the dig homepage based off the rating or diggs received.

Why I Like it: For some reason people think I know everything new on the web and Digg is one of the many resources I use to keep that up.

Web address: www.pandora.com

What they do: Your personal Internet radio station. Imagine if you will a world of radio that played only the songs you like and if it plays one you don’t you can elect never to hear it again. Have the picture in your head, open your eyes you must be at Pandora.

Why I Like it: Pandora creates a radio station based on filtering which adjusts as it learns your musical preferences. For me when I am at home or on the road Pandora keeps me in touch with my music and best of all it is free.

Web address: www.eyespot.com

What they do: Upload your video to Eyespot and use its tools to edit it and publish it on other sites. Ever wanted to get into video editing don’t want to spend a Billion dollars on video editing software well eyespot is a great starting point.

Why I Like it: Eyespot lets me edit video on the fly and best of all it fits my price at free.

Web address: www.dabbledb.com

What they do: Online database system that lets you manipulate data in real time and share it with the world or keep it private.

Why I Like it: I love dabbledb because they let you paste text data into a box and moments later you have a fully functional database. As if that where not enough they through in some really cool stuff like heat maps and on the fly data graphs, best of all they are free and oh so very easy to use, with dabbledb anyone can be a data wizard.
