Last month I wrote a post on DesignMyRoom a web application that allows you to design and share a room online with others. This week SceneCaster launched creating another way for you to build and share your virtual space online.
To be clear this is not SecondLife, you won’t be creating avatars or interacting with other people in their rooms. What it does let you do is create an interactive scene of your room. For example if you were a home stager you could show people what you see for their home, same with an interior designer. For Real Estate offices this could be great way to create a fun interactive map of your office so people can find where your office is before they visit or explore your office (might be a fun hook to keep people on your site see if they can find all the easter eggs you have hidden in your office for a prize).
One of the things I really like about SceneCaster is the sheer volume of accessories that you can choose from. Everything from Plasma TVs to Grand Pianos, it was really fun to re-imagine my home with new furnishings. Also SceneCaster will makes it possible for you to purchase these items through Amazon, Ebay and other online partners. So if you like that new book case and it goes well with the rest of the room you can actually purchase it. What I would like to see is a way for people who you share your Scenes with be able to make adjustments to your scene or highlight stuff they find really interesting.
From a usability perspective I found the program a bit slow at points particularly in 3d mode, but my laptop has integrated video and is a bit older. Most newer computers should not have a problem using the site. Though if it comes up with a warning and says hardware acceleration is not supported don’t even try using the tool at that point it is unusable. Try it out and if you make any cool Scenes share them here. Do you see any uses for a tool like SceneCaster either in Real Estate or in other applications?
